Musings: Retirement, My Life Part 3 + So On!

My teacher, union + other news + views features continue below this blog.

Think summer!

I'm sitting on my 4th floor condo balcony overlooking Weston Rd and the lush green Humber Ravine. It's maybe a kilometre or so across with steep slopes, a winding river and lots of forest, fields, and a small lake. I see blue skies with a whiff of fluffy white clouds above. It's very sunny. A tad unseasonably cool. Not too much though. The heat arrives early afternoon. Our place gets the late day sun. I like early summer. It arrives this Friday. Everything smells and feels so fresh, vibrant and alive. The grounds keepers are mowing the lawn below, filling the air with the smell of fresh cut grass. God I love that.

Exam time is here! The summer holidays are less than 2 weeks away. My autistic students can neither read, write or speak for the most part, so exam time is mostly just supervision. A moot point. I'm retiring. I just got to go in and clean out my office. Probably toss everything once out + for all. I wish everyone well, but I am fed up with the TCDSB, the MOU, all the other B.S. I've paid my dues + have reached my 85 factor, so My Life Part 3 looms on the horizon. Hooray!

My blog will continue. My contact base is pretty solid with all 3 affiliates + I'll have more time to check the daily news, on line and in person. I like actually going to see whats happening best, be it at QP, a rally, a media event whatever. As a blogger I usually get let in or I can pull some strings with all the great people I've met through this site. Any tips, just let me know!

This summer I will be taking my blog show on the road to London, Paris, Havana and Toronto. I can be less political and write about a lot of the other interesting things I see and do. If any teacher shit hits the fan you can be sure I'll be up and covering it. As an OECTA member, I will never forget July 5th. Be forever vigilant my friends! Just because its the holidaze doesn't mean nothing will happen.

I will have a lot to say about my retirement and the wonderful world of teaching nowadays, free from the usual constraints. This blog might just be about to get a whole lot more interesting. Don't worry my good OECTA friends + colleagues. We know all is not well, but I have no bones to pick. I'm glad James Ryan will be Provincial President as of July 1st. It bodes well.

Our new local OECTA TSU executive met for the first time yesterday. For the first time in 6 years I was no longer there. Sigh? Well it does feel odd. However I know you've also got a great executive team at TSU to see you through the challenging contract year ahead. I have no intention of making them squirm either with what I will have to say.

My buddy Sparky and I are plan to set up an Alumni group to support our local affiliate OECTA TSU. It's like a worthwhile project. So many retired teachers, so many skills to help out. Plus the socializing. Ha. We figure we will co-ordinate it through the OFL Toronto York Labour Council. Keep it nice + very union. OECTA TSU rocks!

Janet's gone to Waikiki for her nephews wedding. He's marrying Yuri, who's Japanese so the wedding is being held for both families half way, that is across the Pacific, in Hawaii. Makes sense, I guess. Wish I was there! Meanwhile I'm slumming it, living a bachelor life of sorts, submitting all my retirement papers and so on. This school year is all but over. Life is good. I hope for you too!

Stay tuned ....
